“Physical” by Olivia Newton-John was the biggest hit of 1982, finishing at No. 1 on the year-end Top 100 ahead of “Eye Of The Tiger” by Survivor and “I Love Rock N' Roll” by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. 18 acts placed more than one song on the list, led by Stevie Wonder (3), Daryl Hall and John Oates (3), The Go-Go's (3), Air Supply (3), Olivia Newton-John (2). 1 of the 100 were holdovers from the 1981 list, so 99 songs were new to the year-end chart.

The 1980s: the sound of the era

MTV launched in 1981, and the decade's charts reflect it: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and Whitney Houston became global stars, synth-pop and new wave arrived from the UK, and power ballads and hair metal filled out the year-end lists by the late 1980s.
